You’ve heard the one about the lottery winner who blows it all and ends up back in his double-wide in six months? Here’s is the auto equivalent:
A guy in Santaquin, Utah, won a $380,000 Lamborghini in a convenience store chain’s contest — crashed it six hours after he got the keys.
His prize — in Maverick stores’ “Joe Schmo to Lambo” frequent buyer contest — also included $4,000 worth of training in how to drive, but David Dopp never made it to class. Now, the Associated Press reported, Dopp’s lime green roadster is heading for a Las Vegas shop for repair — apparently there is no Lambo mechanic in Santaquin.
“Yeah, I got it on Saturday and I wrecked it on Saturday,” Dopp told KSL-TV in Utah. Dopp said he was taking friends and family on joy rides that evening when he took a curve at 40 or 50 mph, spun out on a patch of ice or gravel and crashed through some fence posts. There were no injuries — if you don’t count pride.
The AP said the 640-horse Lambo has front-end and wheel damage and scratches, but that Dopp has insurance.
Dopp said it was strange seeing the exotic in his humble driveway and told ABC 4 in Salt Lake City that when the car is fixed, he’s going to sell it to pay bills and buy his wife another car. The Lambo “is going to be all nice and pretty here in a couple of months, I’m sure,” he said.
